Dow Jones 30 Industrial (DJI) Index Highlights

The Dow Jones Industrial Average is the most well-known stock market index in the USA. It was introduced in May 1896 and opened with an initial price of 40.94 points. Initially, the index included 12 selected US companies, established by Charles Henry Dow. Today, the Dow Jones Industrial comprises the 30 most significant and market-leading companies on the American stock exchange, reflecting their price movements. Unlike the largest German indices, the stocks in the Dow Jones are not weighted based on market capitalization or trading volume; instead, they are traditionally weighted by the price of the securities. The index level is determined by a simple average of the prices of the included stocks. Additionally, dividend payments are not considered in the development of the stock market barometer. The inclusion in the index is decided by an independent committee of the "Wall Street Journal." Changes to the index composition are made only as needed, and there are no fixed rules for regular review and updating. Trading hours at Wall Street are from 3:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. CET. During this period, the Dow Jones Industrial Average is calculated on a daily basis.
